The Impact on Owners of the Proposed Changes to Small Business Tax

Presented By:  Ted Maclean, CPA, CMA, CMC, MBA

Ted finds the current finance minister’s proposals to change the small business tax structure particularly punitive and problematic, and feels they will have a broad range of unintended impacts.

Ted is here today to talk about those proposed changes, but more specifically, how they will impact business owners in ways that were likely not anticipated.

Presenter's Bio:

Ted Maclean is an independent Chartered Professional Accountant who practices public accounting in Ottawa, Ontario and Vancouver, BC.

He has provided accounting, tax and advisory services to small and mid-sized businesses for 20 years.  Prior to that, his 15 year corporate career included Quality Assurance, Human Resources, Research, Technology Commercialization and Venture Development.

His focus is on small and mid-sized businesses, their owners and families, and he works closely with his clients’ legal and financial advisors to ensure effective integration between their business and personal affairs.

His specialty is establishing the right incorporation structures, including rollovers from sole proprietorships, and financial efficiency between business, personal and family tax and trusts.

In addition to being a CPA, he is a Certified Management Consultant and has an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business.  His passion is clean business startups and transitions, and as a management consultant, he provides advice and guidance to clients on strategy, structure and systems to enable efficient growth, including the need for good bookkeeping (the lack of which is his nemesis).

In addition to advisory services, he has taken leadership roles in his clients’ companies to accomplish turnarounds as well as acquisitions and exit strategies.   This hands-on business and leadership experience has provided Ted with significant appreciation of the challenges and issues that owners face while operating their companies.
